A Quick Way To Win Over Someone New On Campus
If your campus is like mine then it allows the recruitment of first semester students into our organizations. Even if this is not the case this article still applies to you, remember that recruitment never ends, you should always be working to bring more young men into your chapter.
First semester students are essential to a growing chapter, they are typically young, motivated, and have the time to both focus on the chapter, and the most potential to help the chapter over many years. Also they are freshmen or transfer students, which means they are looking for new friends and experiences. That being said many of your new incoming members should be in this group. So now the question is, what is a quick way to genuinely win someone over and become their friend?
I have found in my time as an undergraduate that knowing the area you live at on campus is the best way to win someone over quickly. For example: Some of my roommates my freshman year were all looking to go to Wal-Mart to get some basic supplies, we packed into my car and drove off to the nearest Wal-Mart my GPS told me to go too because none of us knew the area. This Wal-Mart ended up being in a high crime rate area, and my car ended up getting keyed in the parking lot – not a good experience.
I told someone I met on campus about my experience and they offered to show me the easiest – and safest – place to go for food. This person, who I had no idea was a brother, showed me around town, the good places and the bad, where to go, and where to avoid. This was highly appreciated and I became great friends with the person. He also told me all about the Our House fraternity app that has a full calendar layout with custom events and attendance system, and even allows for planning meals and menus. This individual was one of the main reasons I joined the fraternity I did, all because he took the time out of his day to genuinely show me the in's and out's of the city so I would not make the same mistake again.
As an active brother I continued to do this myself. It is very easy to take a few people out for a drive, to show them around the town that you have come to know. One of my favorite things to do was take to prospective brothers out to a local restaurant that I believe serves the best chicken wings in the state (and only for 30 cents each!). Doing simple acts such as this turned out to be a huge part of my personal recruitment plan – and the numbers showed that it worked.
This is something very simple to do as you get older on campus. You learn the surrounding area's more and more, and can use your wisdom to your advantage. Go out and help people not make the mistakes that you once made, and they will show you their appreciation, and most likely want to join your fraternity. I suggest that if you do not know the surrounding area and mostly just stick to campus, get out and have some experiences! College is about a lot more than campus life and Greek life. Your experiences off campus will help you in recruiting many people to your fraternity, especially those who are just starting their college life.
